This painting marks the moment I stepped back into Western art after years of illness and uncertainty. I had come through healing journey with cancer, through the madness of Covid, and into fatherhood all at once. The cowboy resting at day’s end feels like the reflection of that season. He is worn, but the light around him is almost tender, and certainly beautiful. It reminds me that even after the hardest stretches, life has a way of opening again. The sky can be read as sunrise or sunset, and maybe that is the point. Beauty meets us in both. It reminds us that survival is not the end of the story but the beginning of a new one filled with meaning and promise.
